Relaxation (Swedish) Massage
Light to Medium Pressure used to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. Mainly used for relaxation purposes.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage is a type of massage aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia, also called connective tissue. Deep tissue massage uses many of the same movements and techniques as Swedish massage, but the pressure will generally be more intense. It is also a more focused type of massage, as the therapist works to release chronic muscle tension or knots (also known as "adhesions.")
Deep tissue massage focuses on the deeper layers of the muscle tissue that releases chronic muscle tension. It usually focuses on more specific areas and especially helps athletes and those clients recovering from injury.
Sports Massage
Sports massage is designed to help athletes prepare their bodies for optimal performance, recover after a big event, or function well during training. But you don't have to be in the Olympics to benefit from sports massage. Sports massage is also good for people with injuries, chronic pain or restricted range of motion.
Sports massage is a type of massage that stimulates circulation of blood and lymph fluids. Some sports massage movements use trigger point therapy to break down adhesions (knots in the muscles) and increase range of motion.
There are four types of sports massages:
- pre-event sports massage -- a short, stimulating massage 15 - 45 minutes before the event. It is directed toward the parts of the body that will be involved in the exertion.
- post-event sports massage -- given within an hour or two of the event, to normalize the body's tissues.
- Restorative sports massage -- given during training to allow the athlete to train harder and with less injury.
- Rehabilitative sports massage -- aimed at alleviating pain due to injury and returning the body to health.
Trigger point therapy
Trigger point therapy is a bodywork technique that involves the applying of pressure to tender muscle tissue in order to relieve pain and dysfunction in other parts of the body. Sometimes massage and trigger point therapy are performed together.
Pregnancy massage
Tailored specifically to your prenatal, laboring, and post partum needs as well as the needs of the baby. Reduces stress, decreases swelling in the arms and legs, and relieves aches and pains in muscles and joints.
Hot stones massage
Hot stones that absorb heat are positioned along both sides of the spine to deliver concentrated centers of heat to provide effective tissue and muscle massage at a pressure level comfortable to the client. The client can request light, medium or deep pressure, which is the beauty of the hot stone massage technique. It can be customized in an instant to the request of the client. The hardness of the stones makes for a deep tissue massage and is easy on the joints of the therapist's hands.
The heat from the stones warms and relaxes the muscles and increases the blood flow to the area being worked on to further accelerate the healing process while the increase in circulation calms the nervous system.
The Benefits of Massage:
In an age of technical and, at times, impersonal medicine, massage offers a drug-free, non-invasive and humanistic approach based on the body's natural ability to heal itself. So what exactly are the benefits to receiving regular massage and/or bodywork treatments?
- Increases circulation, allowing the body to pump more oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs
- Reduces spasms and cramping
- Relaxes and softens injured and overused muscles
- Increases joint flexibility
- Improves range-of-motion and decreases discomfort for patients with low back pain.
- Increased circulation of blood and lymph systems improves the condition of the body's largest organ - the skin.
- Reduces recovery time, helps prepare for strenuous workouts and eliminates subsequent pains of the athlete at any level.
- Releases endorphins - the body's natural painkiller - and is being used in chronic illness, injury and recovery from surgery to control and relieve pain.
- Reduces post-surgery adhesions and edema and can be used to reduce and realign scar tissue after healing has occurred.
- Relieves pain for migraine sufferers and decreases the need for medication.
- Provides exercise and stretching for atrophied muscles and reduces shortening of the muscles for those with restricted range of motion.
- Assists with shorter labor for expectant mothers, as well as less need for medication, less depression and anxiety, and shorter hospital stays.
